​Neal Morgan, retired educator, school board member, author, and contributor to the Port Arthur News, addressed Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel at the January 10 meeting. Mr. Morgan reviewed possible changes in the administration of the TRS fund and the consequences they could have for both active and retired teachers. He urged members to become educated about the difference between a defined benefit and a defined contribution and to prepare for a struggle during the 2013 legislative session. TRTA Foundation unit chairman Sylvia Ramirez spoke to the members about making donations to the Foundation. Members turned in volunteer hours and Walks-a-Million steps for 2011. Delegates were elected to represent MJCRSP at the March state convention in Houston.

Ed Boone, Jr., owner of Security Pest Management in Nederland, gave an informational and entertaining presentation called "What's Buggin' You?--What to Look For, When, and Where before Calling the Exterminator." He specifically addressed problems with termites and bedbugs, giving information how to detect the pests and how to avoid them. Following the program, members enjoyed refreshments with a Valentine theme before President Dana Wasser called the business meeting to order. Reports from Volunteer Services and Healthcare committee chairmen for 2011 were heard. District 5 Legislative Chairman Richard Briggs reported on current legislative concerns, mentioning that he will be addressing faculties in the PN-GISD campuses about TRTA. Gail Krohn has already addressed faculties in the Nederland ISD. Delegates to the TRTA State Convention in March will be Dana Wasser, Richard Briggs, Becky Dungan, Clara Graham, and Linda Pinner. Incoming President Linda Briggs announced the committee chairmen for 2012-2013.

Bonnie Brooks, Outreach Coordinator for 2-1-1 Texas and the Project Coordinator for various projects within the Area Agency on Aging addressed the Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel at their monthly meeting in March. Ms. Brooks gave information about how to contact 2-1-1 Texas and what resources are available in the community. State-wide information is available at www.211texas.org. Vice President Linda Briggs presided over the business meeting. Retirement Education Chairman Rose Reese announced that TRTA District 5 will host a luncheon on April 14 for all area school personnel who plan to retire at the end of the current school year. Retirement information will be distributed at the luncheon. District 5 Legislative Chairman Richard Briggs pointed out the importance of being active during the months preceding the next legislative session as important decisions will face the legislature regarding health care and the TRS retirement fund. Delegates to the TRTA State Convention in Houston will be Dana Wasser, Richard Briggs, Becky Dungan, Clara Graham, and Linda Pinner.

Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel met April 10 at the Ritter Center in Nederland. Guest speaker was Ross Penton, Assistant Director of the Nederland, Texas, Field Office of the Texas General Land Office. He discussed the duties of the Nederland office in the event of an oil spill in Texas waters or along the Texas coast within the Nederland district. Refreshments followed the program. Dana Wasser, President, presided over the business meeting. Rose Reese, Retirement Education chairman, reminded members of the Retirees Luncheon & Retirement Information Session scheduled for April 14 at the Golden Corral in Beaumont. Delegates to the state convention gave reports. Attending were Dana Wasser, Richard Briggs, Becky Dungan, Clara Graham, Linda Pinner, Beverly Minaldi, Linda Briggs, Loretta Morman, and Lynne James. The next meeting will be May 8 for the installation of officers. Officers for 2012-2013 are President, Linda Briggs; 1st Vice President, Dana Wasser; 2nd Vice President, Gail Krohn; Secretary, Sue Croom; and Treasurer, Mary Beth McDuff.​

Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel met May 8 at the Ritter Center in Nederland. Refreshments, which consisted of ice cream sundaes, preceded the program. Featured speaker was Richard Briggs, Legislative Chairman for District 5. He spoke to the membership about the need to make contact with state legislators concerning the threatened changes to the TRS retirement fund and to seek continued support for TRS-Care. Dana Wasser, President, presided over the business meeting. Under the direction of Richard Briggs, officers for 2012-2013 were installed: President, Linda Briggs; 1st Vice President, Dana Wasser; 2nd Vice President, Gail Krohn (absent); Secretary, Sue Croom; and Treasurer, Mary Beth McDuff. Linda Fong reported that memorials and get-well cards had been sent and advised members to be aware of food frauds. Final plans for the District 5 Spring Leadership Training to be held May 11 were made. President Wasser concluded her term as president by distributing state and local awards to members.

Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel met September 11 at the PN-GISD Board Room in Groves with President Linda Briggs presiding. Prior to the meeting, members and guests enjoyed a covered dish luncheon. New retirees were introduced prior to the program. Guest speaker was State Representative Allan Ritter, who identified the many challenges facing the state in the upcoming legislative session. He specifically highlighted problems with infrastructure, drought, healthcare, education, and availability of water. The next meeting will be October 9 at the Ritter Center in Nederland.​

Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel met October 9 at the Ritter Center in Nederland with Vice President Dana Wasser presiding. Guest speaker was Kay DeCuir, local realtor, who discussed real estate issues in Mid-Jefferson County. Following the program, members enjoyed refreshments before the business meeting began. The next meeting will be on November 13 at the Ritter Center. Guest speaker will be Marc Shepherd of the Texas Department of Transportation. He will discuss transportation issues in the Mid-County area as well as across the state.

​Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel met November 13 at the Ritter Center in Nederland with Vice President Dana Wasser presiding. Guest speaker was Marc Shepherd of TxDOT, who discussed transportation issues in our area and around the state. Following the program, members enjoyed refreshments before the business meeting began. The next meeting will be on December 11 at the Ritter Center. The program will feature Wynnelle Guidry, who will present The Music of Christmas. Members will bring Christmas edibles to share with those in attendance.

Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel met December 11 at the Ritter Center in Nederland with President Linda Briggs presiding. Wynnelle Guidry and Gail Krohn presented The Music of Christmas, inspiring those in attendance with the sounds and joy of the season. Following the program, members enjoyed refreshments provided by all who attended. The next meeting will be on January 8, 2013, at the Ritter Center. The program will feature Diane Fernandez, who will explore the benefits of message therapy for seniors.
